Cerra Water Alkaline Pitcher Filter Review

Cerra Water Review Summary

This review of the Cerra water pitcher filter will get into the details as to why we’ve ranked Cerra water as the #1 Alkaline Water pitcher filter on the market.

Cerra water as a company has been around for over 10 years and since the beginning have consistently provided outstanding customer service and stood behind their products, they can be found on their website, Cerra Water.

Cerra water has a single primary product, and this is the Cerra Water Filter Pitcher, and it’s Cerra Water Filter cartridge which goes inside.

The Cerra filter contains their proprietary combination of filtration and minerals which gives Cerra water the advantage over other alkaline water filter pitchers.

Method of Filtration

There are numerous methods of water filtration now available, from electrical ionization, natural ionization, reverse osmosis, and over to regular particulate filtration like Brita.

Depending on what factors you compare, many of these filtration methods are missing the mark in one or more than one important place.

First and foremost, we want to make sure that the water filter which we’re using inhibits the growth of bacteria. (BPA free plastic is also a top priority, read more below on the Pitcher)

The point of filtering your drinking water is quickly defeated if bacteria is allowed to grow within the filter and make its way into all the water which we drink.

The Cerra water filter cartridge incorporates nano silver antibacterial balls which rupture the cell membranes of bacteria ensuring that no bacteria can enter your drinking water.

It is typical of pitcher water filters to use carbon filtration to remove the chlorine, reduce odours and remove other heavy metals however carbon, (the basis of all life on earth) is also a breeding ground for bacteria when it sits wet like in water filter.

The Cerra water filter mixes their nano silver antibacterial balls directly in to the natural coconut derived activated carbon to eliminate the possibility of bacterial growth from the beginning.

This natural coconut activated carbon, nano silver antibacterial mixture is WQA S-200/ANSI 42 certified for water filtration, and it is encouraging to see this as most alkaline water pitcher filters are not WQA certified, and in fact many have no certifications at all such as the Santevia water pitcher filter

In short, the Cerra water filter cartridge is certified that it will, using its natural coconut carbon nanosilver mixture with potable tap water,

  • Prevent bacterial growth
  • Remove chlorine & chloramines
  • Remove heavy metals & other contaminants
  • WQA S-200/ANSI 42 certified

If you’re considering purchasing an alkaline water pitcher filter we recommend that you pay close attention to,

  • Is the filter certified? Or does the brand simply claim what their filter does without independent certification?
  • Does it inhibits bacterial growth?
  • Does it remove chlorine & heavy metals?
  • Do they demonstrate tests showing the composition of the water they make or only show the alkalinity?
    • (some brands will add excess calcium to the water to create the alkalinity, talk to anyone who has experienced a kidney stone to know why you should avoid this)

Method of Alkalization, Adding Essential Minerals, Negative ORP, Micro Clustering & Molecular Hydrogen

If you’re still curious to find out what exactly is Alkaline water, check out our page on the topic, its benefits & what to look out for.

It’s interesting to find out that there are numerous methods to create alkaline water, and many of them are certainly not similar at all.

Consider the fact that you could use baking soda, cheap calcium, or even bleach to make water alkaline.

In fact, many of the cheaper alkaline water filter pitchers just use an excess amount of calcium to make their water alkaline (which, if you’ve ever heard of how a kidney stone forms, you know you don’t want!)

Ionization, Making the Water Alkaline

Cerra water will take any pH level of water and transform it into alkaline between +8.5 to 9.5 pH.

This Cerra water filter does this by using their mixture of mini ceramic balls which are made from a proprietary mixture of inorganic minerals, semi precious stones, and crystals.

The composition of this filter cannot be replicated by any other manufacturer as it is proprietary, and this applies to the whole cartridge filter including the carbon, nanosilver filtration certified by WQA/ANSI and the alkalizing mixture which was verified as heavy metal free by an FDA certified laboratory.

The filter cartridge alkalizes water via a number of essential minerals as follows, read more on the full Cerra water process here.

Essential Minerals

The ceramic balls within the Cerra filter are unique in that they create mineralized, alkaline water in an ionic form via a number of minerals.

In addition to adding OH- ions, the proprietary Cerra filter adds carbonate ions of calcium, magnesium, zinc, and potassium which increases the water’s capability of neutralizing hydrons, (H+ ions), and thereby creating a balanced alkalinity.

Many people may not realize that a large contribution of the essential minerals our bodies require to function optimally are actually from the water we drink, and much less from what we eat.

There are many studies available to demonstrate this including this from PubMed, The Contribution of Drinking Water to Mineral Nutrition in Humans

The addition of these essential minerals is something we take into real consideration for a long term use water filter as if you intend to frequently use your alkaline water filter, you may be missing essential mineral nutrients depending on the filter you choose.

Negative ORP - Antioxidant

ORP, or oxidation reduction potential, reflects the water’s ability to be antioxidizing and fight free radicals.

Many alkaline water filters, do not provide a negative ORP and therefore are not antioxidizing even if they claim to be so, learn all about this on our Oxidation reduction potential page.

In fact, if the alkaline filtered water does not have a negative ORP value, it is actually oxidizing by scientific definition of the free radicals within the water increasing cell damage and degeneration.

The Cerra water filter restructures the water into groups of negatively charged ions with an excess of electrons.

It is these excess electrons which work to neutralize the free radicals, each electron can neutralize a single free radical instead of it being neutralized by removing an electron from a body cell (this is known as oxidization).

The Cerra water filter is tested and shown to maintain an excellent production of negative ORP value in its water well into its filter life use.

Micro-Clustering

Micro clustered water molecules are also referred to as hexagonal water and they are the smallest structure of molecules which natural water can form.

Effectively macro large unorganized structures of water molecules are broken apart into smaller clusters, what this allows is for the body to absorb much more of these molecules than it otherwise would.

Think of it like chewing your food into smaller pieces so that your body can absorb it, regular water is just like eating your food whole without chewing!

Many electrical ionizer brands claim that their water is also micro clustered, however the only proper way to test this is through NMR, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and none of these brands have ever produced this data.

An NMR Analysis of water before and after using the Cerra filter cartridge shows that cluster sizes were reduced from 100-130(Hz) H2O molecules down to 50(Hz) H2O molecules demonstrating its effectiveness.

Molecular Hydrogen

Molecular hydrogen, H2, is another form of antioxidant, similar to the negative ions with excess electrons which the cartridge generates.

H2 molecules are neutrally charged and act as an antioxidant, eliminating free radicals, this further reduces oxidative stress and the damage caused by these free radicals.

Molecular hydrogen is something you won’t find in most alkaline water pitcher filters such as the Santevia water pitcher, but has been shown to provide numerous beneficial qualities including combating various human diseases, organ injury among other benefits noted in this PubMed study, Molecular Hydrogen: A Preventive and Therapeutic Medical Gas for Various Diseases

Molecular Hydrogen, H2

The Water Pitcher

There are various sizes of pitcher water filters and alkaline pitcher water filters available now and including the countertop variation.

If you’re currently researching an alkaline water pitcher filter or regular pitcher water filter for yourself, make sure that the plastic is BPA & BPS free, especially if you’re considering an alkaline pitcher.

The reason for which it is incredibly important to ensure your alkaline water filter system is BPA free, whether it’s a pitcher filter or countertop version, is that BPA & BPS will actually leech into alkaline water at a far greater rate than into regular water.

The Cerra Water Pitcher is BPA & BPS free and includes Food & Beverage Safety certifications in addition to safe plastic certifications.

There are actual studies done that show this on PubMed, such as this one, BPA Leaching Enhanced Above pH of 8

If you’re planning to use your water pitcher filter everyday, we recommend you consider an added level of safety by requiring that the pitcher you buy is also stamped with the cup & fork symbol which is the standard safety authority symbol for food and beverage safety used by the FDA, EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), and SPI (Society of the Plastic Industry).

Check first to see if the water pitcher you’re purchasing is stamped on the plastic with Food Safe & SAN 7 (good #7 in plastics for food safety), this way you can truly be sure that the pitcher is safe.

Most brands will not show photos of their pitcher actually being stamped with these safety symbols, and simply claim them on their box which does not indicate that these are safe plastics.

Cerra Water Pitcher, bottom, certified Plastics stamps

Electrical ionizers you may at first think are exempt from the BPA/BPS issue, however all of the tubing used within them is plastic and also needs to be BPA/BPS free. We have not yet seen an electrical ionizer brand show any certification that their plastic tubing is safe, which is concerning, especially when it comes to alkaline water.

The Cerra water filter pitcher includes all of these Food & Beverage safety stamps on their pitcher, including the SAN 7 symbol, and these are all stamped directly into the pitchers plastic so you can actually be certain the plastic is safe, Learn More on the Cerra Water website.

The Cerra pitcher has a total capacity of 0.9 gallons, or 3.3 liters and a filtered water capacity of 0.5 gallons or 1.8 liters which allows for a number of glasses of water from a single filter pass.

The filter cartridge when we tested it was also relatively fast and within a few short minutes you would have a full capacity of filtered alkaline water filled up.

The lid of the pitcher also includes a small date wheel, which allows you to scroll it to the date which you put a new cartridge into the pitcher, this way you don’t need to remember the last time you replaced it.

Prices & Options Available

The main product of Cerra water is their Cerra Water Pitcher, but they also sell a few other products including replacement cartridge filters, replacement cartridge filters in bulk bundle, pH testing drops, and even a water bottle, Cerragizer, so you can take alkaline water with you.

Certifications & Markings

Certifications and product stamp markings are something that we always check for when purchasing a water bottle or really any food container which isn’t made from glass.

Why should purchasing an alkaline water filter pitcher be any different?

This is a feature of Cerra water which we really like, because they’ve taken the time to ensure their products are actually stamped with all of the safety symbols and even that their filtration process is certified.

We have seen other standard water pitcher filters have these stamps and and certified filtration methods for instance with the Brita, but for alkaline water pitcher filters we have not seen this, for instance the well known Santevia pitcher filter.

The Cerra water pitcher and filter cartridge include the following certifications for the product including the stamps for food & beverage safe,

  • WQA S-200 NSF/ANSI 42 Chemical Reduction Certification
  • Food & Beverage Safe Plastics Stamp
  • SAN 7 Food & Beverage Safe Plastics Stamp
  • German TUV Certified Plastics
